 The Old Lady and Her Servant 

The Result of Cleverness

The old lady wakes up to the voice of her pet cock.

An old lady had two servants. The old lady had a small piece of land in the village. She had hired two servants to work there. Both of them used to do husbandry there. That old lady had a pet cock. She got up early in the morning by listening to his voice. As she got up, she also made her servants engaged in work and they had to work continuously till night. The servants felt very bad at getting up early in the morning. But they had to get up with their mistress. It was fine with the winter nights but as the summer nights were short the servant could not sleep well.

Servants wake up to their mistress noise.

Their mistress used to make a noise early in the morning: “O you incapable, unworthy boys! The sun has risen long ago but you are still sleeping? How lazy and idle servants I have! Now get up, hurry up otherwise I will beat you to the extent that you will forget all the laziness." The poor servants at once got up to secure themselves and went towards the fields after washing their faces and worked till night. To avoid the problem of early rising they thought of many ideas but nothing worked.

The servant is thinking about the cock.

One day, a servant said to the other: "I have hit upon an idea to get rid of the problem of early rising. Our mistress gets up by hearing the cock's voice. So why don't we slaughter the cock and eat it up. The other servant got very much excited  to hear that and said that he had said something useful for the first time in whole life. At night when they returned home from the fields they laid down on the cot after having dinner but both of them remained awaking according to their plan. When their mistress fell asleep, both of them got up and reached near the cock. They slaughtered the cock and put the meat aside.

Old lady held the stick and moved to beat the servant.

After getting free from the work they slept peacefully. In the morning the old lady got up late. She tried to search the cock here and there but could not find her cock. So her servants kept on sleeping peacefully and went towards the fields as per their own will. At night both of them came and calmly slept on their cots. But the old lady could not sleep because of the absence of the cock and she kept thinking the whole night that how would she offer prayer in the morning? So she made the servants awake even before Azan. As the servants showed reluctance in getting up the old lady held the stick and moved to beat them. When the servants saw the old lady coming towards them both of them got afraid. One of the servants spoke at once: "If we do not slaughter the cock we would not have to get up this much early." To hear that the old lady became more furious. Then she bitterly beat both the servants.
